Jubilee Year Offers Celebrations for Devotees of Our Mother of Perpetual Help
After successful tours of our Chicago and Grand Rapids, and Baton Rouge, the Perpetual Help Icon and exhibit is now in the Mississippi Delta region. It will be in Biloxi and then Greenwood through December 4. The exhibit includes the Icon of Our Mother of Perpetual Help that was written especially for the 150th Celebrations, as well as many interesting art objects and historical documents related to the Icon.
On June 27, 2016, Redemptorists worldwide celebrated the 150th Anniversary of Pope Pius IX entrusting the Icon of Our Mother of Perpetual Help to the Redemptorists, with the mission to “make her known” throughout the world. Celebrations will continue throughout this year. A special Jubilee Missionary Icon, commissioned for the milestone anniversary, will travel to Redemptorist ministry sites in the Denver Province with portions of the historical exhibit through June 2017.
Below is the schedule for the Jubilee Missionary Icon, followed by some highlights of those events that have already occurred.

Pope Francis Granted a Plenary Indulgence for the Jubilee Year
As part of the celebrations for the Jubilee year of the 150th anniversary of the Redemptorists receiving the icon of Our Mother of Perpetual Help, the Holy Father Pope Francis granted a plenary indulgence.
The indulgence was available to all who made a pilgrimage, between the 27th June 2015 and 27th June 2016, to the Church of St. Alphonsus in Rome or to any Redemptorist church anywhere in the world to venerate the icon of Our Mother of Perpetual Help.
The usual conditions for obtaining a plenary indulgence applied i.e. the celebration of the sacrament of reconciliation, Eucharistic communion and prayer for the intentions of the Holy Father. The visit should conclude with the recitation of the Our Father, the Creed and prayers to Our Blessed Mother.
150th Greeting from Pope Francis
This is excerpted from Superior General Fr. Michael Brehl, C.Ss.R.’s letter of December 11, 2015. He reported to us the Holy Father’s greeting on the occasion of the upcoming 150th anniversary of Blessed Pius IX entrusting the Icon of Our Lady of Perpetual Help to the Redemptorists.
On December 11, 1865, Blessed Pope Pius IX accepted the request of Fr. Nicholas Mauron, C.Ss.R., Superior General, and entrusted the Icon of Mother of Perpetual Help to his care, with the instruction to “Make her known to the whole world!”
In January, the Redemptorists received the Icon from the Augustinians, and on April 26, 1866, Our Mother of Perpetual Help was restored to public veneration in the Church of Sant’Alfonso.
In honor of this occasion, we received this message from the Holy Father, Pope Francis:
“Reverend Father Michael Brehl, Superior General of the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer.
On the occasion of the 150th anniversary of Blessed Pius IX entrusting of the Icon of Our Lady of Perpetual Help to your Institute, the Holy Father hopes that this significant event will awaken a renewed and authentic devotion to the Holy Virgin, stirring the entire religious family and all who share in its charism to offer an ever more effective evangelical witness. With these wishes, His Holiness invokes, through the intercession of the Mother of the Redeemer, abundant heavenly graces, and sends the Apostolic Blessing.
From the Vatican, December 11, 2015
Cardinal Pietro Parolin
Papal Secretary of State”
I invite you to share these greetings from the Holy Father with your community and with the people who gather to honour our Mother of Perpetual Help in our churches, parishes and shrines.
With gratitude, let us pray for God’s blessings on the Holy Father and his Petrine ministry. And may Our Mother of Perpetual Help continue to accompany us all with her tender love and care.
Your brother in the Redeemer,
Michael Brehl, C.Ss.R.
Our Mother of Perpetual Help in Nigeria
Trust in Our Mother of Perpetual Help’s unfailing intercession has spread like wildfire in Nigeria ever since Redemptorist missionaries first arrived in 1987. Her feast day on June 27 has evolved into a major annual celebration, this year attracting an estimated 18,000 people – many of whom traveled for days and wore special clothes made from material imprinted with the image of Our Mother of Perpetual Help. Archbishop Mathew Man-Oso Ndagoso of the Archdiocese of Kaduna presided at the all-day celebration held in a mini stadium in Lagos as the dancing crowd cheered and waved white handkerchiefs to celebrate the inauguration of the Jubilee Year of Our Mother of Perpetual Help.
The faithful eagerly awaited veneration of Our Mother of Perpetual Help, for they believe that they leave all their problems as well as their thanksgiving for her assistance as they touch her image and pray. Each person comes forward with faith and expectation, for they have seen miracles in the lives of their neighbors and trust that if she has helped so many others, she certainly will help them.
Devotion to Our Mother of Perpetual Help is at an all-time high, as Redemptorists in Nigeria celebrated the completion of Our Mother of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Amuwo Odofin, Lagos. Fr. Henry Ogbonna, C.Ss.R. and Fr. Philip Obasi, C.Ss.R. instituted a 21-Day Fasting and Prayer Program in January 2014, which is credited for inspiring both the pastoral team and parishioners to accomplish their goals: completing the church building; paving and landscaping the compound; and building a stone grotto in honor of Our Mother of Perpetual Help. Vice Provincial Superior Kingsley Onyekuru and more than 30 Redemptorists of the Vice Province of Nigeria joined parishioners and many diocesan priests and religious men and women for a celebration of praise and thanksgiving as Archbishop Dr. Alfred Adewale Martins of the Metropolitan See of Lagos dedicated the new church and grotto.
